What do you mean older vs newer one?
The gapps file is playstore and there is no newer or older one you can use. It must be the one outlined in the howto.

opengapps.org wasn't working, threw an error, so I went looking for other sources and found open_gapps-arm-5.1-pico-20161006.zip

Later when opengapps.org did allow me to dl I used open_gapps-arm-5.1-pico-20181023.zip

Well, I'm not sure why you'd not get prompt.  Did it install the playstore?

Did you install both the gapps files?

This is what I call the principle of the mechanic. Get the mechanic in the car and it'll stop making the noise and run right.

While I sat here I re-ran the whole thing and voila got the play store and logged in.
So thank you for the write-up and help and thank you for your aura that convinced things to act right!

Awesome! Glad you got it working.

Any ideas what you did or did not do this time that got it working? It's always nice to add more info when it becomes available.

I'm not sure. The whole process for me has been anything but straight forward. ;)
The only thing out of place at the end there was previous attempts to root with Kingo left something behind that prevented FlashFire getting root and SU updating.
I had to use FLashify to update SuperSU and that allowed FlashFire to flash gapps.
Not sure how that might've impacted this.

Well here is issue number one. You never said you tried some other rooting stuff when you first posted. It's kind of hard to offer help when you only give a tiny bit info about what got you to your troubles.

Here I am thinking you followed this guide from beginning to end and something didn't work as outlined in the guide.

Knowing what I know now, I probably would have told you to reinstall the latest CS firmware and start over from scratch.

Well, I never did find out anything but how to upgrade the fw, I'm on 2.4.7 and if that let me root then I'd not want to go any further.
As it was I settled for factory reset a couple times.

There are few improvements in the newest FW version. Namely the heat reduction issues.

http://dl.djicdn.com/downloads/CrystalSky/20180525/CrystalSky_Release_Notes_EN_0525.pdf

You can download it with.

https://github.com/cs2000/DankDroneDownloader

It's well worth the upgrade and then you can do this guide from start to finish knowing there wont be issues.

ummmm, you tempt me!
I had so many side issues, getting adb to ls devices, for example that I hesitate.
Heck I had too much fun doing this I'll probably do it.
How far up the fw chain can you go and still root? I love Dank I just sent a donation his way.

Epic work.. looks like you have covered everything..

Question.. what is the risk element of "bricking" the CS?

NLD is great, as worse case you roll back to something DJI will still support..  Let's say I screw something up along the way with your guide, am I risking turning my CS into a prolonged sadness?

Can you "factory reset" somehow and pretend this never happened?

I am sooooo tempted to have a go..
